Shoulder impingement occurs when the acromion, the top outer edge of the shoulder blade, rubs against or pinches the rotator cuff beneath it. The causes of the impingement may include torn or swollen tendons which may result from overuse or repetitive activity of the shoulder. Inflammation to the bursae and insufficient flatness of the acromion are other significant causes leading to shoulder impingement.
